DUNN, N.C. — Officials are searching for suspects after a military statue depicting Major General William C. Lee was set on fire at a museum in Dunn.

According to a post on the Major General William C. Lee Airborne Museum’s Facebook page, somebody poured a flammable liquid over the white marble statue at about 10 p.m. Thursday and set it on fire.

A local fire department was able to douse the flames, but the statue was significantly scorched on its left side. The outline of what is believed to be a fuel container is also visible in the middle of the burn marks.

Museum officials said that they are looking at the possibilities available for cleaning and repairing the statue.

According to the museum, Lee was a World War II major who is known as the “father of the United States Army.”

Authorities will review nearby security cameras in an attempt to locate the person responsible.
