ZEBULON, N.C. — A Middlesex police officer was injured Wednesday night when his patrol car crashed into a semi-trailer truck.

The crash occurred in Zebulon around 11:15 p.m. on N.C. Highway 39 near U.S. Route 64.

According to Zebulon police, the officer failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into the side of a passing semi-tractor trailer. The patrol car caught fire and the officer was pinned inside.

The fire was extinguished and the officer was pulled out of the car. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The patrol car did not have its lights or siren activated at the time of the crash, police said. It is unclear if charges will be filed against the officer.

N.C. 39 was closed in both directions until 3 a.m.
