MIDDLESEX, N.C. — A 21-year-old man from Middlesex was arrested and charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Federal officials say he assaulted officers using a metal flag pole.

Federal court documents say that Matthew Jason Beddingfield jumped over a barricade on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and charged toward a group of Capitol police officers. He attacked one of the officers, "jabbing at them with a metal flag pole he brought with him," the court records said.

The federal government obtained several videos and pictures of Beddingfield, all from different angles, that show him holding an American flag and using it to harm Capitol police.

Beddingfield was also among a group fo rioters who entered the Capitol through a door on the upper west terrace.

He planned to storm the Senate Wing, where a joint session of Congress was trying to certify the 2020 presidential election results, the documents said. Again, Beddingfield used his metal flagpole to hit law enforcement officers near the Senate Wing of the Capitol.

Beddingfield also entered the office "of at least one congressperson before finally leaving the Capitol," according to federal court documents.

Federal officials were able to confirm Beddingfield's identity using photos and videos posted publicly on his Father's Facebook page and with the assistance of internet sleuths and journalists.

Photos and video of Beddingfield went viral on Twitter as internet sleuths worked to identify him. He was given the nickname "#SoggyKidInsider" after pictured inside the Capitol covered in liquid and "#NaziGreyHat" after he was photographed while making a gesture associated with the Nazis, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

Photos of Matthew Beddingfield posted by the Metropolitan Police Department.
During that time, the Huffington Post also identified Beddingfield in an article using publicly available facial recognition software.

Due to the amount of evidence presented by the FBI, it's unclear why it has taken a year to charge Beddingfield.

Federal officials were also able to further confirm Beddingfield's identity using footage from WRAL-TV. In 2019, Beddingfield turned himself over to the police after accused of shooting a 17-year-old in the head in the parking lot of a Walmart.

Beddingfield was out on bail from an attempted murder charge in that shooting when he was charged in connection to the Jan. 6 riot.

Jason Beddingfield, Matthew Beddingfield's father, told WRAL News he had no comment in regards to his own presence at the Capitol.

Beddingfield is the 26th person from North Carolina to be charged in connection to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
