DURHAM, N.C. — A cat is back home with his original owner in Durham after more than two years.

Smokey the cat vanished in March over two years ago and hadn't been seen since. Smokey's owner, Chelsea Francis, ended up moving from Durham to Zebulon without the cat.

Then on Monday, Francis' old neighbors found Smokey and took him to the vet. As it turned out, Smokey had a microchip.

Neighbors were able to take Francis' old address and do some investigating to track her down.

"The cat had been lost since March 2020. They looked for the cat for six months apparently and posted and tried to find it but gave up and thought it was lost. Then two years later, the cat skips the pandemic and went home to his family," said Scarlett Harrod.

Neighbors said Smokey's story was a good reminder of how helpful a chip can be in making sure your pet always returns home.
