Raleigh, N.C. — Road conditions were messy around the Triangle during the Thursday morning commute. Several accidents led to closed roads and delays due to congestion.
All across the Triangle highways, signs with orange letters warned: Heavy rain. Reduce speed."
According to some drivers, a ride that normally takes 25 minutes took 40.
An SUV hitting a moped left the moped driver injured and caused NC-54. to close.
Another major crash at I-440 eastbound near Wake Forest Road left only one lane open.
A water main break near NC State left Brooks Ave. closed, forcing drivers to find alternate routes.
The Durham Freeway showed significant congestion, and an accident on 40 westbound near Jones Sausage Road caused delays as well.
No flooding had occurred yet during the Thursday commute, but crews were preparing for the potential for floods later in the afternoon.
"Turn around, don't drown," officials warned.
The evening commute has potential to be even more tumultuous, with severe storms predicted to roll through the Triangle as early as 4 p.m. and linger through 8 p.m. or later.
