WELDON, N.C. — Halifax County sheriff’s deputies said Thursday they are searching for a man wanted in a violent assault and kidnapping that happened earlier this week.

Deputies said they responded to a call Tuesday about an armed robbery at Three Flags Mini Mart in Weldon. Two men told deputies that they were in their car in the parking lot of the store when three men rushed over and jumped into the vehicle.

One of the victims said one of the assailants continuously hit him in the back of the head with the butt of a rifle as they were forced to drive to an address in Weldon. The victims said the two other assailants were armed with pistols.

Once they arrived at the address, one of the victims was pulled from the vehicle and kicked several times. Deputies said the assailants robbed the men of money and other items before running away.

One of the victims knew his attacker and identified him as Omar Daquan Ponton, 19, of Weldon. Ponton has been charged with kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputies said Ponton also is wanted in a separate incident that happened in October. In that case, he is facing charges of injury to personal property and discharging a firearm into an occupied moving vehicle. Ponton also has a pending probation violation charge.

Anyone with information on Ponton or the other assailants is asked to call the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 252-583-8201 or Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444.
