Men charged with firing guns on New Year's

Rocky Mount police arrested two men they say fired guns within minutes of ringing in the new year.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount police arrested two men they say fired guns within minutes of ringing in the new year.

Officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the 1200 block of Planters Street five minutes after midnight Thursday. There, police said, they found Travis Lamar Parker, 24, who was carrying a SKS rifle and 12-gauge shotgun.

Parker was charged with discharging a firearm inside the city and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Officers on patrol in the 800 block of Clark Street heard shots fired about 10 minutes after midnight. Police said they saw Terrell Gains, 20, holding a shotgun, and he ran into a residence at 840 Clark St.

Inside the house, officers found the shotgun and 12 small bags of marijuana, police said.

Gains was charged with discharging a firearm in the city. Another occupant of the residence, Demitri Smith, 28, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
