RALEIGH, N.C. — When our newest Go Ask Mom contributor, Nili Zaharony was writing the answers to this Q&A, she got an addition to her household - a second hermit crab.
In addition to caring for her full house, Nili is a recovering tech marketer, certified fitness instructor, marketing consultant and artist about to embark on a return to school after nearly 20 years in the real world. She and her husband also founded NC Triangle Connection to help others relocate to the Triangle.

You can catch her posts throughout the month on Go Ask Mom.

How many children, pets, family members are you caring for?

3 children (Neta-Li - 5, Yarden - 3, Mei-Tal - 6 months), 2 cats (Zoltar and Kishta - 1 year), 2 Hermit crabs (Hermy and Batman)

What type of parent would you describe yourself as?

I think of myself as the hot mess mom. I can never quite get organized and I forget something just about every time I leave the house. At the same time, I'm a bit Type A which goes against the lack of organization. There is only so much I can chase after the tiny humans (and the big one for that matter) to hang up the towels or pick up the toys. My son is mildly feral, but otherwise we have a lot of fun together and that's what really matters.

What has been the most rewarding part of parenting or caregiving?

Watching the tiny humans grow, learn to communicate, and turn into the mentsches we hope they will be as adults.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your life?

I grew up with a single mom and an absent alcoholic father. It has definitely shaped how I react to the world. We moved a lot in my teen years and I've spent nearly equal parts of my life in California and Israel. That has resulted in me being not fully Israeli but not feeling fully American either. I would say the other major challenge I've faced was when my oldest was diagnosed with Infant Botulism and spent 2 weeks in the hospital. That has resulted in some definite PTSD.

What are some of the stories or topics you are excited to write about and share on WRAL?

I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences as a mom of three, hospitalizations, COVID-19 diagnoses, ADHD, sleep training, etc. Other topics I'll hit on include fitness, changing careers in my late 30s, going back to school, and raising Jewish children in a very non-Jewish world.
