ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — An 18-wheeler crashed and caught fire early Monday morning in Halifax County.

The crash occurred before 3 a.m. on Interstate 95 southbound near Roanoke Rapids. A viewer who passed the crash sent video of the fiery scene to WRAL, saying the truck ran off the road near the Virginia Border at Mile Marker 169, striking a tree.

In the video, the photographer can be heard saying, "I don't think he made it out," but officials have not provided an update on the condition of the truck driver.

I-95 SB was still closed at 11:30 a.m. near Exit 171 for N.C. Highway 125. By noon, some lanes had opened.

As a detour, motorists must take Exit 171 for NC-125 S, turn left onto NC-125 S and continue for five miles to NC-903. Then, turn right onto NC-903 and continue for five miles to re-access I-95 S.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
