RALEIGH, N.C. — Parents are hearing about the latest mass shootings in California and Mississippi with a lot of concern.

As those parents prepare to send their children back to school, there's a new tool out there that could bring some peace of mind. Bulletproof book bags are showing up at some stores. The question is whether parents would be willing to pay upwards of $200 for protection for their children.

Parents we spoke with say they would not think twice about protecting their kids. That means shelling out $200 for this bulletproof backpack.

"I've got two kids, every parent should be emotional over something like that," said Laurie Ann Walker, a mother of two.

Bullet resistant and bulletproof backpacks are for sale online at different retailers across the country but we found them on the shelves right here in our backyard at Office Max.

"It's sad," Walker said. "It's the world we've come to. I have a seven year old, too, I have a 16-year-old and it's really sad even when you send your seven year old to school and elementary school … things happen."

These Guard Dog security brand backpacks hit shelves in the back to school section. The company's founder says he doesn't want parents or students to be afraid … just prepared. The company tried out the book bag on a gun range and it did the job of stopping a bullet.

Logan Styers is a student at Apex High School. She also said it is better to be prepared than underprepared in class.

"We shouldn't need to have them, but in this era, it happens all the time, crazy stuff happens everywhere so you need them, but we shouldn't," Styers said.
