An update to the district's mask policy and a decision about bus driver pay are two topics that will be covered at Tuesday's Wake County Board of Education meeting.

School bus driver pay has become an important topic this week as dozens of Wake drivers participated in a sick-out Friday and Monday, leaving about one-third of parents finding an alternate way to get their children to school.

More than 150 buses didn’t run Monday during the protest, and on Friday, 200.

The district is in the middle of a bus driver shortage, aiming to fill 220 vacant driver spots, which offer a starting pay rate of $15 an hour and a $1,200 sign-on bonus.

On Tuesday, board members are also expected to vote on a 1% raise to the local supplement the county provides for certified positions like teachers. While the state budget funds education across the state, counties supplement that at different amounts.

The Wake County board on Tuesday could also consider raising the minimum wage to $13 for non-certified positions, like instructional assistants, and approve a one-time bonus of $1,250 for all district employees.

The district-wide bonus would cost Wake County $25.8 million in total, officials say. Part-time staff will get a prorated bonus.

The mask policy, if changed, would be a small difference regarding who needs to wear masks outdoors and when.
