Marlene Carole, WRAL-TV 'weather girl,' has died

Marlene Carole Klett Shumate, the first woman to present the weather on WRAL-TV, died Wednesday at the age of 80.

Marlene Carole Klett Shumate, the first woman to present the weather on WRAL-TV, died Wednesday at the age of 80.

In her appearances on WRAL-TV during the 1960s, she went by her maiden name, Marlene Carole, and was known for signing off after her forecast with a wink to the viewers.

Shumate had a long career in Raleigh that included work for Myrick Realtors and Ammons Pittman.

She is survived by a daughter who lives in Wilmington.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1500 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh.
