RALEIGH, N.C. — Here's something lots of families out there will want to mark on their calendar: The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will host a sensory-friendly morning from 9 a.m. to noon, Sunday, May 19.

Here's the description from the museum's website:

Join us for a Sensory-Friendly Morning, free from the hustle and bustle of the general public, at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. With a calmer, quieter atmosphere outside regular museum hours, visitors who benefit from these accommodations are invited to explore the museum in comfort. During the event, you can meet scientists, live animals, and have hands-on fun in the Discovery Room.

An 11 a.m., sensory-friendly screening of “Backyard Wilderness 3D” also is scheduled. The lights will be turned slightly up; the sound slightly down; and everyone is welcome to chat, get up, and walk around. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Museum Box Office for $5 general admission; $4 for seniors, students and military; $3 for children (3-12); and $2 for Friends of the museum members.

A sensory map that identifies sensory-friendly spaces within the museum, as well as social stories for what to expect when visiting the museum, are available on the museum's website. Noise-canceling headphones will be available for free at the Information Desk with identification.
The museum's accessibility page has more information about other accommodations are available at the museum for museum visitors with special needs.
