— A Marine killed during a training exercise in California was stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Jonothan Barnette was shot in the chest during a training exercise on Oct. 3. The 24-year-old was married with a baby on the way.

The Marine Times reports Barnette belonged to an infantry battalion based at Camp Lejeune.

His family has questions about the day he died, saying he was not wearing the right protective equipment when he was shot.

"There's an hour and 13 minutes that are unexplained to us, unexplained what happened," said his mother, Robin Hayes. "Unexplained whether or not he had last words, unexplained if he was dead and they were trying to bring him back. So many questions run through our minds,"

Barnette's family said they won't have those answers until an investigation into his death is complete.
