WILMINGTON, N.C. — Corporal Edwin Estrada, a Marine helicopter mechanic, died early Monday morning following what the Marine Corps called "an incident" in Wilmington.

In announcing Estrada's death, the Marines did not offer any information about how or why he died or provide further detail about the time and location of the incident that led to his death.

Jennifer Dandron, a spokesperson with the Wilmington Police Department, told WECT that police found Estrada, 27, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

She said police believe Estrada's death is an isolated incident, and that they have a person of interest in the case.

Military and local law enforcement officers are investigating the incident.

Estrada was from Los Angeles. He joined the Marine Corps in July 2014 and had been assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Aircraft Group 29.
