Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh will hold its Kickoff to Kindergarten for new kindergartners and their families this Saturday.

The special event, once held for just a few hours, is now all day - from 9 a.m .to 5 p.m., in part, because so many people come out for it. It is free for new kindergartners and their families.

I took my daughter two years ago when she was getting ready for kindergarten and she had a great time. It's a good way to prepare for those first weeks in school or celebrate the beginning of the school year (which has started for many kids).

Among the activities, kindergartners can board a real school bus, go through a pretend lunch line, get a library card and meet characters from UNC-TV. For parents, teachers will be on hand for any questions. There also will be information about easing the transition for parents and their kids, along with tips on packing healthy lunches.

Scheduled activities include circle times, story times and PE classes. For all the details, including the full schedule, check the website.
