Manta rays prompt shark scare along Oak Island beach
Someone spotted what appears to be large sharks near the beach, Oak Island Water Rescue posted to social media Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedOak Island Water Rescue posted pictures to social media Thursday, but after an investigation, it turns out the "fins" belonged to a school of manta rays.
"We don't want to alarm anyone because this is a very natural thing," the post read, explaining the sharks were spotted near 4300 East Beach Drive, the area between Publix and the 40th Street Inlet Park in Oak Island."
If you swim in the ocean, experts recommend swimming with a buddy and staying close to shore. It's best not to go in the water at dawn or dusk.
Experts also say you avoid swimming if you see fish or seals around.
