FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man wounded three weeks ago in an exchange of gunfire with a Cumberland County deputy following a domestic disturbance call has been released from the hospital and is now in jail.

A woman called 911 shortly on Sept. 4 requesting assistance in the 1100 block of Armadillo Drive near Fayetteville because Timothy Devon Smith Jr. was at her front door, authorities said.

When the deputy, whose name hasn't been released, arrived, Smith opened fire on him, authorities said. The deputy returned fire, wounding Smith.
