CARY, N.C. — Cary police have identified the people involved in Thursday's shooting at a hotel that left one person dead and another injured.

Officials said Kerry Savalas Keaton, 39, was the man who was found dead in the parking lot of the Extended Stay America, located at 1500 Regency Parkway. Police said they responded to the hotel at 7:40 p.m. Thursday. Officials at the time said they believe his gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Police then found Shanta Pollard Shermeker, 44, in a room at the hotel. She was critically injured and was transported to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, where she is still recovering.

Officials said Keaton and Shermeker were in a long-term romantic relationship. While the circumstances of Shermeker’s injuries are still under investigation, no other individuals are believed to be involved.

The hotel's clerk had called police about the shooting, and numerous guests said they were shaken up.
