DURHAM, N.C. — One of two men who opened fire inside a Durham mall on the busiest shopping day of the year will spend the next nine years in prison.

Romeo Kevante Pride, 27, was already a convicted felon when he brought a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun to Streets at Southpoint Mall on Black Friday 2021.

Pride pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon in December 2022 and was sentenced on April 17, 2023.

According to documents and facts revealed in the course of Pride's plea deal, he and another mall patron each fired their weapons, setting off a mall evacuation and hours of chaos.

Durham police officers recovered a spent .40 caliber shell casing fired from Pride’s handgun and surveillance video from the mall confirmed the events. Pride and two others – including a 10-year-old – were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

In addition to Pride, two others are charged in connection with the day's events.

Lamonttae Taylor, of Durham, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Officers who arrested Taylor also charged him with with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jaquaay Walton, 31, of Virginia, who was charged with carrying a concealed gun, turned himself in and was released on bond.
