Man who allegedly swallowed heroin moved from hospital to jail

Police on Friday took a man from WakeMed to the Wake County Jail, charging him with drug trafficking because he had swallowed bags of heroin.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Police on Friday took a man from WakeMed to the Wake County Jail, charging him with drug trafficking because he had swallowed bags of heroin.

Paramedics took Ochunkwo Ezikpe Ogbuanu, 43, to the hospital June 17. Surgeons removed bags containing more than a pound of heroin from his body.

Ogbuanu told emergency workers that he had flown from Nigeria on Saturday, June 14, with 42 bags of heroin inside his stomach.

Police waited until he had recovered from surgery and then charged him felony trafficking in heroin by possession and felony trafficking in heroin by transportation, both felonies.

His bond was set at $750,000.
