Man wanted on Virginia murder charge killed himself outside Durham school, police say
A man being sought in connection with a Newport News, Va., homicide shot and killed himself outside Eastway Elementary School in Durham, police said Friday.
Posted — UpdatedPolice said the body of 39-year-old Karlos Evan Andrews had been in a car parked at the school for at least a day before it was found at about 4:30 p.m.
Warrants had been issued charging Andrews with use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by felon.
Durham Public Schools officials said Eastway Elementary students never went near the car, but a school staffer told WRAL News that she saw the body in the car Friday morning and thought it was a colleague taking a nap.
The parking lot of the school, at 610 N. Alston Ave., was taped off Friday evening as police collected evidence. Most of the students had already left for the day, police said.
"I’m grateful that this incident and the individual who was found had no connection with the Eastway school community," DPS Superintendent Pascal Mubenga said. "Our students, teachers and staff were never in danger, and there is no threat to any DPS school. We are looking forward to a good school day on Monday."
Police said the man had no ties to the Durham area, so they weren't sure why he ended up at the school. Authorities were still at the school into Friday night.
"That they can come out the door and see something like that, it was very disturbing," said Tiffany Bodak, who lives in the area.
"We can't talk about the security measures that we have, but I can say that we do have security cameras and other equipment that we use," said Chip Sudderth with Durham Public Schools. "The most important thing is that our kids were safe and kept away from this investigation."
