Man wanted in shooting of teen

DURHAM, N.C. — Police announced charges in a July 3 shooting that wounded a 17-year-old boy on Linwood Avenue.

Bernard Millard Heggins Jr., 27, of Sybil Drive, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious.

Police said Heggins is still at large. He might be driving a gold Chevrolet Cavalier with dark, tinted windows.

Investigators believe that Heggins was one of two men who confronted the 17-year-old boy at a store in the 1100 block of Linwood Avenue around 7 p.m. on July 3. The men chased the teen across the street, and a physical fight ensued.

During the fight, the victim was shot and later treated at Duke University Hospital.

At the time of the shooting, Heggins was serving 36-months' probation for a May 2006 conviction for carrying a concealed weapon.

Heggins was convicted on the same charge in July 2005 and on drug possession charges in 2003 and 2005. He received probation for all those convictions.
