GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A man struck by a train in Goldsboro on Thursday night has died.

City officials confirmed the crash occurred around 9 p.m. at the railroad tracks in the 2700 block of Royall Avenue between Sunburst Road and Spence Avenue.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad freight train hit Michael Allen Wheaton, 28, who officials said was walking west on the tracks.

"The train was blowing the horn and Wheaton acted as if he did not hear the train coming behind him until the last second," a press release read. "Wheaton then turned around and was struck by the train."

Officers found Wheaten dead at the scene between tracks and a wooded area.

His family was notified.
