RALEIGH, N.C. — Shots were fired Thursday afternoon in a shopping center in the 3400 block of Poole Road just before 12 p.m.

A man, who identified himself as the driver of a blue truck that was shot, was taken into custody by officers at about 3 p.m. He was released a short time later.

Terrence Perry, who witnessed the shooting described it as "unexpected."

"They locked us inside KFC. Saw the cops come, he said. "If I knew this was happening today, we definitely would not have come over here."

Otis Perry Jr. was working behind the counter at Subway when he heard the shots.

"I was working with a customer and I heard a gunshot. I ducked down because that's how I normally play. I be joking with my co-workers. I didn't think anything of it," he said.

But it was no joke.

"A few minutes later I saw the police driving by and I looked out and saw bullet holes in the truck," Perry said.

People who work and visit the busy shopping center say Thursday shooting a reminder that violence can happen anywhere.

"(It's) very scary because people bring their kids around here. And you don't ever know when this could happen," said Juan Cuevas, who was shopping at the time.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.
