Man struck by truck on I-40 dies

A Wallace man struck by a commercial truck on Interstate 40 on Friday afternoon has died, the Highway Patrol said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wallace man struck by a commercial truck on Interstate 40 on Friday afternoon has died, the Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened just before 6 p.m. between Garner and Raleigh just west of North Carolina Highway 70.

Troopers said Kevin J. Pickett, 27, was driving on I-40 West when he pulled onto the shoulder of the road for an unknown reason. He got out of his car and was struck by an on-coming commercial truck.

Passerby stopped to help Pickett and performed CPR until an ambulance arrived to the scene. He was transported to WakeMed Hospital for treatment. He died on Friday night, troopers said.

Pickett was traveling alone in his vehicle. The driver of the commercial truck was not injured

The wreck remains under investigation, troopers said.
