KURE BEACH, N.C. — A suspect has been identified after a deadly shooting between neighbors in a small North Carolina beach town.

Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, a call came into 911 following a dispute and shooting between neighbors. Several law enforcement agencies responded to Ocean View Avenue on Kure Beach.

Jordan Johnston and his mother in-law, Doris Patrick, were visiting from Ohio with their family.

"We were like, something is going down right now. Cops were everywhere," Patrick said. "So yeah, it was terrifying. We sent the guys -- our gentlemen -- to the store. And they came back and they're like get in the house, get in the house."

The family planned for a day at the beach but ended up locked inside their rental home.

"We heard five to six gunshots, and we rolled in, we didn't know if it was some roofers, and then come to find out we had a cop upfront, a couple assault rifles, and they said don't come outside," Johnston said.

The suspect, William Bennett, went back inside his home after shooting John Garisto multiple times.

Police said, while officers tried to save Garisto, they heard a single gunshot come from Bennett's home. Police went inside and found him dead.

Ocean View reopened late Tuesday evening.

Kure Beach police said they aren't aware of responding to any incidents at the suspect or the victim's home before. There is no word yet on what caused the deadly argument.
