— A Garland man has been charged with murder in an overnight shooting at The Peter Rabbit Club, outside Roseboro, the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators said Louis Franklin Highsmith Jr., 35, of 625 Garland Airport Road, got into a verbal altercation with Linwood Dion Rich, 26, of Salemburg, outside the club on Willie Brown Road around 12:30 a.m.

Witnesses told deputies that Highsmith pulled out a gun and shot at Rich once. They also gave investigators a description of Highsmith and his car.

Rich suffered a gunshot wound to his back, deputies said. He was transported to the Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton, where he died.

The county's Highway Enforcement Awareness Team located Highsmith’s green Ford Taurus on Garland Airport Road, just outside of Garland. Deputies took Highsmith into custody.

Highsmith was being held at the Sampson County Detention Center without bond on Saturday afternoon.
