FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County deputies said a man was shot in the leg during a traffic stop on Wednesday night.

The traffic stop, which involved a Honda SXS1000 utility vehicle (ATV), occurred at the intersection of Palm Springs Drive and Honeycutt Road in Fayetteville after deputies said they saw a drug deal taking place.

During the stop, deputies said the vehicle's driver, Darrell Stephen Hunter, 31, of Hope Mills, jumped out and ran off. At the same time that Hunter was running away, deputies said they heard what they believed to be a gunshot or the sound of the ATV backfiring.

When they approached the ATV, the back passenger, Jeremy Romon McLean, 31, of Hope Mills, had been shot in the leg. McLean was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

A third, unidentified female passenger also ran from the vehicle, according to deputies.

Deputies said they are continuing to look for Hunter, who was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, red shorts and red socks. He was last seen on Center Street in Fayetteville.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective J. Upchurch at 910-677-5539 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
