DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man shot by an employee during a robbery last week is facing several felony charges in connection with the incident.

Police said Alonzo Hester, 30, entered a Jackpot Sweepstakes at 2000 Chapel Hill Road at about 4 a.m. on Jan. 4 and played some games before breaking into a locked office inside the building.

Hester demanded money from a woman inside the office, but the employee grabbed a gun and shot him, police said.

Hester grabbed the gun during a fight and again demanded money, at which point the woman gave him cash from the register before calling 911, police said.

Hester was found by police a short distance from the business and taken to an area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds, authorities said.

He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony breaking and entering when he was released from the hospital Saturday.

Hester was being held in the Durham County Jail under $250,000 bond Monday night.

Authorities said the employee will not be charged in connection with the shooting.
