AVON, N.C. — A man's body was found Friday morning on a Hatteras Island beach, authorities said.

A local resident found the body on the beach between Salvo and Avon at about 9:15 a.m. and called 911. National Park Service law enforcement rangers, Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Dare County Emergency Medical Services paramedics and first responders from the Chicamacomico Banks Fire Department responded to the 911 call.

The body appeared to have been in the ocean for an extended period of time, authorities said.

The remains were sent to the state medical examiner’s office for identification and to determine the cause of death.

No other details were immediately available.

The family of Erik Mezick, whose delivery truck plunged off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel near Norfolk, Va., on Dec. 29, posted on Facebook that they were notified the body was his.

"Erik has been found in North Carolina!" the family posted. "We said he would present himself when he was ready and in true Erik style he did just that today on his favorite beach!"
