RALEIGH, N.C. — A man was hit by the driver of a Raleigh police vehicle on Gorman Street in Raleigh on Friday afternoon.

The stretch of Gorman Street near Graduate Lane was closed around 4 p.m. The vehicle was seen with a broken windshield from the crash.

"I was walking down the stairs in the building close by and I heard tires screeching and someone getting hit," said a resident. "When I got down here, there was a person lying on the floor."

A resident who came right out after hearing the accident says it was pretty scary.

"The road is a very curvy road and a lot of people hit high speeds, so it was pretty bad," said a resident.

Emergency Response radio traffic reveals the moments EMS arrived to assist Donald Alston Jr.

"We just got on scene. I have a 36-year-old male, alert and oriented," said EMS.

During the call, EMS also said there was significant damage to the windshield and it was an RPD car involved.

"He has multiple lacerations to his upper right extremity," said EMS.

Shortly after, Junior was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The biggest shock for some locals was stepping out and finding a police car involved.

"They're supposed to be the protectors," a resident said.

When the crash occurred, his daughter said Alston was crossing the street to reach a mail truck.

The officer driving the vehicle was responding to a call with the emergency lights flashing.

Alston's family told WRAL they're thankful he's alive.
