LUMBERTON, N.C. — Lumberton police and deputies with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office were on the scene after two men got into a fight at the Walmart Thursday night, with one of them pulling out a gun.

The incident happened at 6:49 p.m. at the Walmart at 5070 Fayetteville Road. Officials initially suspected an active shooter situation, setting off an alarm on social media and panic around the area. Law enforcement quickly determined it was not an active shooter event.

Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill told WRAL's Gilbert Baez two men were fighting inside the Walmart. One of the men pulled a gun and chased the other out the store. Several people in the store tried to break up the fight before the men ran out, got into separate vehicles and fled before law enforcement arrived.

McNeill said no shots were fired inside the store but was unsure if shots were fired outside. Both men got away. Police and deputies who were on the scene said they were aware of the suspects and were currently looking for them.

McNeill said nobody was hurt. The store was closed as the investigation continued but was scheduled to reopen again on Friday at 7 a.m.
