CLINTON, N.C. — An armed robbery suspect died early Friday after leading state troopers on a chase through three counties.

Troopers chased the man, Kelly Ray Batchelor, 33, through Pender, Duplin and Sampson counties. At one point, Batchelor fired shots, authorities said.

Sampson County deputies threw out tire spikes, bringing the chase to a halt on U.S. Highway 421 just south of Clinton. Negotiators tried to get Batchelor to surrender, but he shot and killed himself, officials said. No one else was hurt.

Batchelor was from Wilmington and had numerous felony and misdemeanor convictions on his record, authorities said. He was on probation.
