MAXTON, N.C. — A man died Sunday when a dumpster fell on him at the Campbell’s Soup plant in Robeson County.

Authorities said Alex Radford was attempting to empty a dumpster into a larger dumpster at the Campbell Soup plant on N.C. Highway 71 in Maxton, when the smaller dumpster fell off the track of the forklift he was operating.

Authorities said Radford was attempting to put the dumpster back into position when it fell, pinning him underneath.

Deputies said a second man attempted to free Radford, but the dumpster shifted and pinned both men underneath.

Both men were rescued by emergency officials at about 10:30 a.m. and taken to an area hospital, where Radford, 59, of Laurinburg, later died.

Deputies said the incident is under investigation, but Radford’s death has been ruled accidental.
