ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Maryland man who was killed in a high-speed wreck Thursday morning has been identified.

Robert Anthony Teal, 36, of Aberdeen, Md., died, and Adarian Martin, of Roanoke Rapids, was critically injured in the wreck near N.C. Highway 125, authorities said.

Roanoke Rapids police tried to pull a car over for a traffic stop Thursday morning when the driver sped off, authorities said. As the car turned off N.C. 125, it ran off a side road into an embankment and sheared off a utility pole, authorities said.

Teal was ejected from the vehicle, and authorities had to cut Martin out of the mangled car.
