WADE, N.C. — Two Florida children were safe Friday night after their father ditched them and their mother on the side of Interstate 95 in North Carolina.

Police said Edward Gamez drove the family 600 miles, from Vero Beach, Fla. to Cumberland County, where Maria Lopez and her two kids were told to get out of the car and the father took off.

For a week, Lopez and her 4-year-old and 10-month-old were considered missing, but that ended early Friday morning.

Lopez walked about a mile with the kids to get to a convenience store at a gas station on Goldsboro Road in Wade. From the store, they called family members back home in Florida, as well as investigators who were looking for them.

Police are now searching for Gamez. Thursday, in Vero Beach, officers said Gamez shot and killed a man he believed was having a relationship with his girlfriend. Another man was also injured in the incident, said police.

Authorities said Friday that Gamez was on the run. Anybody who believes they have seen him is asked to call 911.
