RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police said Friday they have arrested the man who was involved in a single-car crash on Interstate 87 Wednesday night before he allegedly stole a passerby's vehicle that had a female passenger inside.

Authorities did not provide the circumstances of how Toney Bridges, 47, was taken into custody, but he is facing charges of first-degree kidnapping and larceny of motor vehicle, police said in a written statement.

Officials said shortly before 11 p.m., Bridges was a passenger in a car that wrecked in the northbound lanes of I-87 near South New Hope Road.

Bridges veered across all of the lanes and hit the guardrail in the median before the vehicle turned over on its side, according to 911 calls.

When Shatasha Dillard stopped to help, Bridges jumped in her vehicle and drove off.

The driver's 12-year-old daughter was inside the car when Bridges drove off, police said.

According to investigators, police said Bridges fled to Knightdale, parked the car on Walbury Drive and then fled on foot.

Dillard found her daughter unharmed in the car, she said in a phone interview with WRAL News.
