Man hit, killed by box truck on I-40 Wednesday night

A man died on Interstate 40 in Johnston County late Wednesday night when he stepped into the path of a box truck.

The truck driver was visibly shaken when he told WRAL News that there was nothing he could do to avoid hitting the man. The driver said the the man was suddenly right in front of him near the Meadow exit.

Authorities hope to identify the victim on Thursday. He left a locked iPhone behind but had no identification.

Part of I-40 was shut down for nearly two hours during the investigation. The road has reopened.

The driver will not be charged.
