BUXTON, N.C. — A 79-year-old man died Sunday afternoon after he was found floating in the ocean near the Cape Hatteras recreational area, near Buxton, according to officials.

A bystander saw the man, who was about 30 yards from the beach without a floating device, and brought him to shore to begin resuscitation measures. The efforts to revive him were not successful.

The man was visiting from Pennsylvania, officials said.

Although rip currents were forecast for the area and the individual was found in the water, the cause of death is unknown at this time.

This is the first swimming-related fatality off the seashore in 2018. There were seven swimming-related fatalities in 2017 and eight in 2016.
