DURHAM, N.C. — Unattended frying was the cause of a fire at a Durham home early Sunday, according to Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi.

According to Iannuzzi, a man fell asleep while frying french fries on the stove at a home along 3200 Duke Homestead Road. Firefighters responded around 3 a.m.

The fire caused heavy damage to the kitchen, the attic and the roof, in addition to smoke damage throughout the home, officials said. One adult and two children were forced out of the home and will stay with relatives.

No injuries were reported.

According to Iannuzzi, unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires in Durham and the rest of the country.
