DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man who was apparently on railroad tracks was struck and killed Friday morning in downtown Durham by an Amtrak train bound for Charlotte, authorities said.

The crash happened around 7:25 a.m. on West Pettigrew Street, near Blackwell Street, and it resulted in some traffic delays for morning commuters as police erected crime scene tape around the area as they investigated the crash.

Mossenthal Chavis, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one on the train was injured.

No passengers on Southbound Train 73, which provides service from Raleigh to Charlotte, were hurt during the incident, according to authorities.

Amtrak did tweet that Northbound Train 74, which transports passengers from Charlotte to Raleigh, was canceled.

The company said it would transport passengers via bus because of the incident.

It was not immediately clear what Chavis was doing on the tracks when he was struck.
