DURHAM, N.C. — A man in his 20s died after being shot in southeast Durham on Tuesday night, police said.

The shooting occurred in McDougald Terrace on Dayton Street around 11 p.m.

The man was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle. Authorities had said the man was expected to survive his critical injuries, but he died Wednesday morning.

A homicide investigation is underway.

Police did not release details about a suspect or a motive.

The shooting comes less than 24 hours after a security guard was fatally shot in downtown Durham.

Jay Aaron Foust, 46, worked for Allied Universal, which had been hired by the city and assigned to patrol a City of Durham parking deck. He had been in the job for two months before he was found in an alley with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at a hospital.

Police records show violent crime is up 20 percent in the city this year.

McDougald Terrace is Durham's largest public housing community, and numerous initiatives have tried to prevent crime there.

In 2017, retired police chief Steve Chambers started "Stone Soup" to tackle the area's economic development, education, health and wellness, law enforcement and mentoring recreation.

In 2018, a new cultural center was established, including a computer lab, history room and library.
