DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was charged with murder Friday in connection with a fight Tuesday night in which three people were stabbed, including a 23-year-old man who died.

Police charged Robert Lewis Lyons, 52, with stabbing Tony Montrel Burns during the fight in the 1500 block of North Hyde Park Avenue. Burns died of his injuries early Wednesday.

Lyons and a woman, whose identity hasn't been released, were also stabbed. The woman was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police have said that an argument preceded the fight but haven't released more details about what led to the stabbings.

Lyons, of North Hyde Park Avenue, was placed in the Durham County jail after being released from Duke University Hospital. He was denied bond.

State Department of Correction records show that Lyons has four previous assault convictions – assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in 1999, assault on a female and simple assault in 1997, and assault inflicting serious injury in 1992.

He served 18-month prison sentence for the 1999 conviction and then seven months in 2004 for violating the terms of his release, records show.
