Man Drowns in Cape Fear River

A man drowned in the Cape Fear River in Harnett County late Saturday night, officials confirmed.

LILLINGTON, N.C. — A man drowned in the Cape Fear River in Harnett County late Saturday night, officials confirmed.

Eugene Ventura, 35, of Fuquay-Varina, was swimming with friends off the boat ramp on Wildlife Road. He went underwater and did not resurface, investigators said.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office receive calls about the drowning in a stretch of the Cape Fear River, north of the intersection of Ross and Wildlife roads near Lillington around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

After an approximately two-hour search, emergency personnel found Ventura's body in 10 feet of water near where he was last seen, officials said.

His body was taken to Betsy Johnson Hospital.

The Harnett County Dive and Recovery Team responded to the drowning, along with sheriff's deputies, the Summerville Fire Department and Harnett County emergency medical services personnel.
