KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — A man drowned Saturday afternoon after entering the water at Kill Devil Hills.

Authorities said a man in his 60s went missing while swimming at about 12:15 p.m.

The man was spotted in the water at about 12:30, but was unable to return to shore due to rough surf and strong currents, officials said.

Lifeguard crews at Second Street were able to pull the unresponsive man from the ocean and began CPR. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said red flags were in place at Kill Devil Hills beaches, indicating that swimming was not allowed at the time of the accident because of dangerous conditions.

The man was one of many to drown this summer at Outer Banks beaches.

Last month, a man from Massachusetts died while swimming at Ocracoke Island and a 55-year-old man from Benson drowned off Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Those drownings happened within eight hours of each other, authorities said.
