SANFORD, N.C. — A 35-year-old man drowned on Sunday after a boat overturned in Sanford.

The victim was identified at Terry Lopez McNeill Jr.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office was called to the 6600 block of Broadway Road for a report of a drowning.

Deputies said four people were fishing. McNeill and another person were in a small boat and two others were at the edge of a pond, when the boat overturned and threw McNeill and the other person into the water.

One person, who was fishing from the edge of the pond, jumped into the water to locate McNeill, but wasn't able to find him.

The other person thrown from the boat was able to swim to safety.

Benhaven Emergency Services and other rescue agencies were unable to find McNeill. Members of the Fort Bragg dive team, along with Harnett County agencies, were able to recover McNeill.
