HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The Orange Rural Volunteer Fire Department battled a blaze at a home in western Hillsborough that left a man dead early Saturday morning.

A police officer driving by called in the fire at a home on 110 W. Hill Ave. around 4:15 a.m. Crews found the house fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, and firefighters had to break down the front door to get access to it.

Smoking material on a couch and the floor of a front room started the fire, Hillsborough Fire Marshal Jerry Wagner said. The blaze spread rapidly, because it was also fueled by an oxygen tank the victim was using.

The blaze gutted most of the interior and left the exterior standing as a shell. Neighbors said the wood frame house was approximately 80 years old.

The victim was later identified as Roger Ray, 57.
