BROADWAY, N.C. — A Harnett County man was arrested Thursday evening in connection with a fatal fire at his home earlier in the day.

Jacob Lee Killinger, 34, was charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of arson and was being held without bond in the Harnett County jail.

The fire started around midnight at 12770 N.C. Highway 27 in Broadway, authorities said.

Mark Anthony Wood, 57, was trying to extinguish the flames inside the home and never made it out, according to his brother, Benjamin Wood.

“He was someone who would do anything for you," Benjamin Wood said. "He was a jack-of-all trades. He lived his life helping people.”

Mark Wood's wife, Wanda Wood, escaped the burning house and called 911, authorities said.

Investigators determined Killinger, who is Wanda Wood's son and also lived at the home, set the fire.
