Man dies in afternoon shooting at McDougald Terrace in Durham
Durham police have identified a man who was gunned down Sunday afternoon during a shooting at the McDougald Terrace community.
Posted — UpdatedInvestigators said Maurice Day, 19, of Durham, was shot during an incident that occurred around 1:15 p.m. in front of Building 37 at the community, located at Wabash and E. Lawson streets.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Day suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.
Police also said that a woman was shot during the same incident and she was rushed for treatment to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not identify her.
Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Brinkley at 919-560-4440, ext. 29322 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
According to the Durham Housing Authority, the multi-family community has 360 apartment homes and is classified as low income public housing.
Statistics from the Durham Police Department show violent crime in the city is up, including homicides, which are up 42 percent from last year.
The community is concerned. In September, two shootings were reported in a 24-hour period. A woman was grazed by a stray bullet as a group of men shot at a car, and a man was shot around while standing outside in broad daylight.
The Durham Police Department and city leaders are working together to address the uptick in crime and homicides.
Schewel also said the city is working on a long-term plan to tackle the root causes of crime by concentrating on mental health and drug addiction programs and bringing affordable housing and more jobs to the city.
Police Chief C.J. Davis said the shootings could be gang-related. "We want to assure the community that our top priority is to investigate and solve the recent shooting crimes in an effort to prevent further gun violence, and loss of life," she said.
